Introduction

In the Indian subcontinent, Hijra are eunuchs, intersex people, and transgender people. Also known as Aravani, Aruvani, Jogappa, citation needed] or (derogatorily) Chhakka, the hijra community in India prefer to call themselves Kinnar or Kinner, referring to the mythological beings that excel at song and dance.

Transgender people are individuals whose gender identities do not pertain to their biological sex and thus they differ from the stereotype of how men and women normally are. Transgender people choose different terms to describe themselves.

Transgenderism in India is a widely known culture yet mainstream population has no proper awareness about the community. They are maltreated and oppressed socially. Most of the time they are disowned by their own family due to the fact of being a transgender. They are having number of exasperating setbacks in a developing country like India.
Current Scenario in India

AP High Court (June 16, 2025) ruled that trans women are legally women and entitled to protections under Section 498A (anti-dowry/cruelty laws). This is a landmark reinforcement of dignity and equality. (Times of India)

Calcutta High Court (June 18, 2025) mandated that passport authorities accept an official transgender identity card for documentation. (Times of India)

Kerala High Court allowed a transgender couple to be listed simply as “parents” on their child's birth certificate, without gendered titles. (Times of India)
